Dr Kovalak was born and raised in Michigan. She attended the University of Notre Dame for her undergraduate studies. She then returned to Michigan for medical school at Michigan State University. She moved to Portland, OR for her internship and residency at Providence Portland Medical Center. She went on to complete a Gastroenterology Fellowship program at the University of Utah. Dr Kovalak’s clinical training during fellowship was broad and included all areas of gastroenterology and hepatology. Her research interests included eosinophilic esophagitis.
